Arsen Artsruni is an inmate at Nubarashen prison, serving a life sentence for crimes related to terrorism, including premeditated murder. Artsruni was one of 11 convicted and sentenced to death in the notorious Dro trial on December 10, 1996. His sentence was later changed to life in prison. Although he is serving a life sentence, Artsuni is scheduled to graduate the Masters Program at Urartu University of Practical Psychology and Sociology three years from now, when he will be 48.
Artsruni was born in Lebanon, where he received a bachelor's degree in psychology at Haykazian College. He moved to Armenia in 1989 to organize computer classes in Armenia and Karabakh. Sidetracked by the law from his initial purpose (computer training), Artsruni taught computer and foreign languages to his fellow prison inmates. Now, he plans to become the prison's first resident student.
Urartu University sent a list of examinations and corresponding literature so that he could prepare for examinations. On November 3, Artsruni passed the exams with excellence. According to the examination commission members, when they informed Artsruni that he had been admitted to the MA course, he said that his dream of eight years had been fulfilled. For eight years on end the condemned prisoner had been applying to different higher schools and only this year he managed to get the consent of the Ministry of Education and Science.
If he is able to complete the entire curriculum, Arsen Artsruni will have an MA degree from Urartu University in 3 years.

The Geneva International Fund of High Quality and Practical Functions awarded a gold medal to the Urartu University of Practical Psychology and Sociology of Yerevan for its efficient educational and scientific activities. The university director, Prof. Sedrak Sedrakian told NT correspondent that the award giving ceremony will take place at the 9th international conference for "High Quality of Business and Education" to be held in Geneva on September 15-16.
Urartu University was founded in 1990. At the present time it has a state accreditation and is cooperating with many international scientific centers and universities. In 2002, a branch of Urartu University opened in Los Angeles, which offers master's degree programs approved by the US government. The university graduates work in Armenia, as well as in various psychological and sociological centers abroad. Since 2002, the university started a two-degree educational system: Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. According to Dr. Sedrakian, at the present no fundamental research in psychology is being conducted in Armenia. At the initiative of Urartu University, a Psychological and Sociological Research Center will open by late 2005 in order to fill this gap. Opening a psychological service center adjunct to the university is also in the works. Urartu University cooperates on a contract basis with other higher educational institutions of Yerevan such as Interlingva University, the University of Management and High Technologies and the Financial Academy.
