| This is the slogan of the “Urartu” University of Practical Psychology and Sociology – the only specialized university in the Republic of Armenia.
Coming together with Professor Sedrak Aghassie Sedrakyan, the director of the University, a group of outstanding psychologists of the Republic managed to establish a university that corresponds with the international standards by its professional guidance and high levels of training in a very short time period.
The founders of the University realized clearly that the newborn independent country – Armenia, integrating the international structures, needed qualified specialists not only in the sphere of economy but also in the sphere of science and culture.

The idea of establishing a psychological university was born shortly after the 1988 tragic earthquake in Armenia. The disaster shook the north-western regions of the country which had advanced in industry, dense population, rich culture and national traditions. In a matter of seconds a large number of cities and villages were in ruins, taking the lives of thousands people. The survivors faced an unbelievable sorrow caused by the loss of their homes and loved ones. At the same time the republic was at war due to problems in Karabagh.
Economic blockade of Armenia, genocide of the Armenian population in Azerbaijan, theft and resettlement; this was the picture of the new-born independent Republic of Armenia. As a result, cultural centers closed one by one, decreasing the cultural life that was so alive in people, negatively affecting the relations among citizens.
As a social creature, a human being could not remain indifferent towards this type of change. The stress and strains of adjusting to this new living environment and the moral and physical dissatisfaction caused for an array of psychological and physical problems in people.
The republic needed a great number of qualified psychologists and social workers to help the citizens with the trauma and grief that they were faced with to rehabilitate and recover. The republic needed its own psychological school to prepare specialists who with their cultural awareness, would better understand and heal the people of this hurting nation.
Taking the republic’s situation and demands during that time, in 1991 “Urartu University” opened its doors to those who wished to receive a higher education and contribute to the helping field.
The administrators of the university are proud to state that the students are being taught according to the local and foreign educational standards. Doctors of science, professors and assistant professors all comprise the staff at Urartu University. The courses taught and degrees received all meet the demands of the correspondent bodies of the government of the Republic of Armenia.
Urartu University has published a great number of books, psychological tests, magazines, methodological textbooks, programs and the articles of our lecturers. In the past five years, fourteen books and textbooks have been published.
Technology plays an important part at the university. The University is provided with modern computers with internet connection, where students and professors have access to the World Wide Web.
The University is provided with studies where trainings and lessons of psychotherapy are held. The university staff which includes not only lecturers (academicians, professors, assistant-professors) but other collaborators as well (deputy rector and the head of studies) plays an important role in the life of the University.
We are confident that the students of the university, both from Armenia and those from other countries, upon completion of their coursework and graduation, will have become qualified professionals and will contribute their knowledge and research to rebuilding the independent Republic of Armenia.
